Shifting Gears On Language

Do you use slang? How do you feel about people who do?
Write about the way people use language. Consider the following:
  • Are there different kinds of slang?
  • What types of people use slang?
  • When is slang appropriate?
  • When is slang not appropriate?

In order to receive full credit you must write at least 5 complete and correct sentences with quotation marks around any slang words you use. You must also respond to a classmate's post using one of the following sentence starters:
I agree because...
I disagree because...
I don't understand...
That reminds me of...

  1. I was always told to never use slang. In some cases you could use slang to explain something, but it shouldn't be something you use on a daily basis. For example, if u can't find a way to explain something you could use some slang to try and clarify your idea. If you use slang in every sentence you use people are gonna think your not that smart or not a good kid.I was always told and i believe slang should never be used.

    4. i agree i think that using slang to help an explanation continue faster is a good thing . and also using it on a daily basis is not a good idea because it will make people think lower about you. :) good job!!!

    5. I agree, because every kid is raised differently and maybe talk the same.

  2. yes but it really depends where i am when i use slang, for example at the skate park i do sometimes but at school i don't. i actually feel bad for the people that use slang 24/7 because maybe they don't have a good home environment. yes there are different types of slang like cursing or just not using correct grammar. usually people that do not care about correct grammar as much. slang is appropriate when your around your friends or texting. slang is not appropriate in school.

  3. I do use slang, it depends on the environment i am in and why I'm using it. If I'm with a group of friends and we are all messing around than i feel slang could be appropriate. If I'm at a job interview trying to make a good impression on the person doing the interview i wouldn't use slang. Everybody uses slag in my opinion its doesn't have to be all the time but i guarantee everybody has used slang before. People use texting, computer, writing all kinds of things to use slang.

    1. I agree because sometimes, it's not appropriate to use slang if you're trying to be professional, especially in a job interview because if you tell the guy how turnt up you're gonna be, don't even bother. Other than that, Using slang around friends is appropriate at times because it doesn't really matter how you talk to them because they'll talk the same way too. 😂

  4. I use slang all the time. I mainly do it when i'm too lazy to sound it out or when i don't want to write down the whole word on paper. Some slang I use is "Turnt up", "Bruh", "Bae", "Thot", or Beyonce style: "Surfboard". I use these all the time for some reason, I mean everyone does. It's just shorter and easier ways to say words that are annoying. On the other hand, I don't really care if people use slang as long as their not taking it too far and being stupid about it. But other than that, it shouldn't matter. Some slang isn't very appropriate at times such as in class. Especially in a reading class or else your teacher will probably slap you in the head for not pronouncing proper grammar. Although, in some cases such as hanging out with your friends or during family events, it's appropriate to use slang. The type of people that use slang is white people and annoying 6th graders. Or anyone, really.

    1. I agree with you 100% like it can be inappropriate for certain cases and certain times. We should use them with friends because it can be disrespectful with adults, or young adolescents might not even understand this generations slang yet.

  5. I rarely use slang, and when I do, its probably something like "yo" for when I talk to my close friends. I don't really think using slang is appropriate ever, unless you are joking around with people you know. People who use slang in the work and school environment just look stupid to me. It just doesn't make sense that someone would use curse words or improper grammar to there boss or teacher. Basically slang should be used with your friends only.

    1. I agree with that only slang should be use around your friends.

    2. I agree with that because its extremely disrespectful to talk to someone of higher knowledge like that.

  6. I think they're are definitely different types of slang. Because if your with your family you wouldn't call them "mean" slang words like you may call your friends. I think that the type of people that use slang are almost everyone. Almost everyone has they're own slang they'd use around certain groups of people. I think that slang is appropriate only around certain people, like friends and family and stuff. It would not be appropriate to be at a job interview and call the person interviewing you "home slice". I think slang is not appropriate when talking to people in a classier setting or when your at a place or thing or talking to someone that requires more respect.

  7. When I use slang it mostly when I'm around friends joking around while we talk, but if I'm having a serious conversation I will barely or never use slang. I don't using mind people that use slang but if I'm around them trying to have a serious conversation, and they use slang I will just try to ignore the use of slang. The appropriate time not to use slang is when you're at a job interview or at a formal area or event. The appropriate times to use slang is when you're just joking around with friends or talking to your family members.

  8. I do use slang. I think that using slang is most appropriate around people that you are comfortable with and people you know will behave the same around you. Not with not with just any person you see on the street. People who use slang towards a person that is most likely proper can really effect the first impression of you and thats important. You should not go to a job interview using slang because its not the right time for that. Using words like "Wassup", "Yolo" ,"Cray Cray" , "Rad" ect really doesn't show the impression of you being a smart person or a person that will act well or speak well around people in the business section. A lot of ghetto people use slang arounds there friends and family and don't think anything about it because there use to using that language around them.

    2. True "Bruh" I agree. Someone will sound uneducated if they use slang words while at an interview to be a lawyer!! "hahah"

  9. I use slang when I'm with my friends. using slang is appropriate when your with your friends, or hanging out with some chill people or joking around. Slang is inappropriate if you're at school/work or if you're with someone important. It doesn't matter to me if you use slang just don't make yourself look stupid. I use it al the time when I'm texting and usually when I'm with my friends or family because everyone does and its easier.

  11. I mostly use slang when i'm speaking with my deaf friend or at home. Slang can be appropriate but not all the time. When you are are out in public and you see strangers and you want them to look down on you and say your a good kid, but if your walking through the store and your yelling cursing and saying stuff you shouldn't say they are going to think your a bad kid. Also another reason if you really thin chard about it. I f you were deaf and went to school with a bunch of deaf kids. You can't wiser you can't hide what your trying to say. It's all open and everyone will see it, so everyone kinda makes up their own "slang signs".

  12. i agree with kiana i use slang alot because i don't sound it out. i also feel like if people can understand what you are saying slang doesn't really affect anything.so let's say i walk into a room full of all diffrent people and say wassup" everyone would know what im saying.

  13. Yes, I use slang every single day for as long as I can remember. I'm from Mass so I pretty much use words close to what they use in Boston. For example, "ma" as in mother, "fah daze" - for days, an excessive amount of; "bah-gin", got a deal/ discount. To really get an idea, we usually drop our "R's" in words. I talk with my accent around anybody no matter who it is. It's different when I'm around kids though. Adults may vary, like adults and my friends, I always use a good vocabulary, -I get it from my dad- but at the same time, I show my respect in my speech with adults. My slang also consists of this generation like "bae" or "turnt up", terms of that use. Slang should be used with your friends, but not necessarily with young adolescents and elderly people. It can be disrespectful when not used properly.

  14. I do not use slag words most of the time. I feel like there lazy not to use complete sentences. If they don't use proper words i feel they don't know how to speak appropriate and sound uneducated, if you speak with slang words at the wrong moments.
I think slang is appropriate when your texting someone or just hanging out with your friends. Slang is not appropriate when you have a job interview or talking to an adult. There can be different kinds of slang words. Some can be bad and some can be good.
For example: Some slang words people use now a days don't make sense and are used to be mean to people. Some words can be nice and just to be used for communication to a friend.

  15. Yes there are many kinds of slang, some good and some bad. Not necessarily bad, but just inappropriate. There's different types especially around friends and at formal dinners. When you hear slang you think of gangster talk or street smack, but there's others. Its appropriate to use slang when talking to friends or kids at your age, but then when your near elders or at school its best to speak proper and be respectful.

  16. I use slang a lot when I'm around my friends, but I think people shouldn't use it all the time. Slang is appropriate when you're texting or talking to your friends. When you're with your friends every word you say shouldn't be slang. Slang isn't appropriate when you're at school. When you use slang it makes you look like you're not smart and you don't behave.

  17. Yes i use it a lot. I agree it dose have to do with where you came from or are growing up. Slang should not be used 24/7 you should know how to transition from formal to slang talk without thinking about it. There are many types of slang. Theres slang that people use to symbol illegal activity, theres slang that you use to talk to your friends.

  18. Slang is used a lot. In texting, talking and writing. I feel like we can use slang, but not when were writing. Its just not right. Use slang when you're texting or talking to your friends, not when you are talking to elders or anyone older then you.

  19. i use along but not as much as people here in this school. i believe people know slang from the places they've been or lived in. For example, if you lived in a bad neighborhood your more likely to use more slang than a person that lived in a high class neighborhood but then again there is some people that use it in certain places.

  20. I am one of the people that rarely use slang on any occasion. I think slang is used by people who are try to be cool. Slang would be used to shorten words and is used in everyday life. Some think slang is based on how you I've and where you grew up. so our language and the slang we used is based on how we live.
